MANILA, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has selected Police Major General Nicolas Torre III, currently chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), as the next head of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The appointment, confirmed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, comes as current PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil is set to retire in the first week of June.
Bersamin indicated that the President considered five candidates for the top police post, though he did not disclose their names.
Torre, a prominent figure in recent high-profile cases, is well-known for leading the arrests of former President Rodrigo Duterte and alleged trafficker Apollo Quiboloy.
His career includes leadership roles in the Quezon City Police District, Davao region police, Western Samar Provincial Police Office, and police stations in Batangas City and Mabalacat. He also brings experience from intelligence and field operations in Central Luzon and Mimaropa.
General Marbil’s term was previously extended by four months beyond his mandatory retirement age of 56 in February, a move aimed at ensuring stability during the election season. His extended term is now set to expire on June 7.
