Singaporean PM Lawrence Wong visits Malacañang, renews commitment to stronger ties with PH

MANILA, Philippines – Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong arrived at Malacañang Palace on Wednesday, June 4, for a bilateral meeting with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., marking his introductory state visit to the Philippines.
Wong, accompanied by his wife Loo Tze Lui, was welcomed by President Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and Cabinet members. Following arrival honors, both leaders introduced their delegations before proceeding inside the Palace for the signing of the guest book.
During their bilateral talks, President Marcos Jr. and Prime Minister Wong renewed their commitment to enhance Philippines-Singapore bilateral relations and work together to ensure regional security and stability. Marcos expressed his intent to boost cooperation in priority sectors including health, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, renewable energy, the environment, and people-to-people exchanges, calling them “vital and priority sectors for the development of our countries and for the region.”
“The bilateral relations between the Pearl of the Orient and the Lion City have not only endured but have thrived in the last 56 years. The depth and breadth of our ties extend beyond government institutions,” Marcos stated, emphasizing the importance of “enduring collaboration with meaningful benefits” in a “complicated changing world.” He affirmed that the Philippines considers Singapore “a trusted neighbor, a dependable friend, and reliable partner.”
Prime Minister Wong echoed these sentiments, highlighting the “vibrant and enduring partnership” developed over decades. “Amidst this changing and more challenging geopolitical environment, it is even more important that we stand together,” Wong told Marcos.
As founding members of ASEAN, both leaders agreed to continue upholding and advancing peace, security, and stability in the region. Marcos highlighted that regional stability has fostered unprecedented growth and sustained development. “Amidst these uncertainties, we have set out a fresh direction for the region with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 that seeks to achieve a resilient, innovative, dynamic, and people-centered ASEAN. I look forward to working with you and other members of ASEAN in turning this vision into a reality,” he said.
Wong’s visit is the first by a Singaporean prime minister to the Philippines since 2017. The leaders are also expected to discuss climate change mitigation and civil service cooperation, as well as exchange views on key regional political and economic developments.
