MISSING SABUNGEROS
Sack of bones recovered in Taal Lake amidst search for missing ‘sabungeros‘

A sack containing what appear to be burned human bones was recovered by authorities on Thursday, July 10, 2025, during search operations in Taal Lake, believed to be connected to the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of several “sabungeros” (cockfighting enthusiasts).
The Department of Justice (DOJ), through Secretary Remulla, confirmed the discovery. A team from the Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), retrieved a white sack from the lakebed during what was initially intended as a preliminary technical site assessment.
“This was during what was only supposed to be a preliminary inspection. However, a white sack was visibly identified and recovered from the lakebed,” the DOJ statement read.
The discovery marks a potentially significant breakthrough in the long-running investigation into the missing sabungeros. As part of their evidence-based approach, authorities outlined the immediate next steps:
- A formal forensic examination, to be conducted by either the CIDG or the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), to certify whether the remains are indeed human.
- DNA testing to determine if there is a match with any of the families of the missing individuals.
“This discovery could represent a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation. While we proceed with caution and diligence, it offers renewed hope that we are closer to uncovering the truth and securing justice for the families of the missing,” the DOJ stated, emphasizing the cautious yet hopeful outlook on this development.
