MANILA, Philippines – Veteran broadcast journalist Emil Sumangil has publicly sought prayers for his safety, acknowledging the inherent “risks” that come with his impactful work, particularly in the ongoing investigation into the missing sabungeros case.

In an Instagram post on Friday, July 18, the “24 Oras” reporter shared a poignant image of himself holding a rosary, accompanied by a prayer: “Iligtas mo ako sa banta’t peligrong dala ng aking trabaho, higit sa lahat sa tukso’t kasalanang lumalason sa aking puso’t isipan, Mahal na Panginoon.” (Protect me from the threats and danger brought by my work, and above all from the temptations and sins that poison my heart and mind, dear God.) He concluded with a simple “Blessed Weekend, friends. Wet weekend tayo,” a nod to the prevailing weather.

Sumangil’s appeal for spiritual support comes after his exclusive interview with Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, an accused-turned-whistleblower in the disappearance of several cockfighting enthusiasts. In the bombshell interview, Patidongan implicated prominent personalities, including businessman Atong Ang and actress Gretchen Barretto, as allegedly being behind the abductions. He further claimed that the bodies of the missing sabungeros were disposed of in Taal Lake. Both Ang and Barretto have vehemently denied these allegations.

Sumangil’s wife, Michelle Tolentino Sumangil, took to Facebook on July 4 with a “personal prayer request.” She expressed profound gratitude to netizens who had already initiated calls for her husband’s safety and protection.

“Your concern, prayers, and vigilance brought light and strength to us during this time,” Michelle wrote, before sharing her own heartfelt prayer: “Dear Lord, thank You for Your constant protection and grace. We lift up Emil into Your loving hands. Surround him with Your divine shield and keep him safe from harm. May Your peace reign in our hearts as we trust in Your perfect will. Amen.”

She concluded her post by quoting Isaiah 54:17: “No weapon formed against you shall prosper…”, signifying a strong faith amidst potential challenges. Michelle’s social media appeal underscored the gravity of the situation and the perceived threats that accompany high-profile journalistic investigations, particularly those involving powerful individuals and sensitive allegations.
