Tsunami advisory for PH canceled following Russia earthquake

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has canceled its tsunami advisory for the Philippines following a powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck off the East Coast of Kamchatka, Russia earlier today. The advisory, initially issued for minor sea level disturbances, has been lifted as of 4:40 PM Philippine Standard Time (PST) on July 30, 2025.

The earthquake, with a depth of 74 kilometers, occurred at 7:25 AM PST on July 30, 2025, at coordinates 52.2°N, 160.0°E. While the initial advisory cautioned coastal communities in numerous Philippine provinces to be vigilant for minor sea level disturbances, Phivolcs reported that available data from sea level monitoring stations facing the Philippine Sea showed no significant sea level disturbances or destructive tsunami waves since the earthquake.

  • Davao de Oro

Phivolcs stated that the effects due to minor sea level disturbances have largely passed, leading to the cancellation of all recommendations for this event.
