MISSING SABUNGEROS

Murder raps filed vs. Atong Ang, others in missing ‘sabungeros’ case

MANILA, Philippines – A criminal complaint for multiple murder and serious illegal detention has been filed against businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang and others in connection with the missing sabungeros (cockfighting enthusiasts) case. The complaint, which also names members of the “Alpha Group” and some police officers, was filed at the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The filing was a long-awaited moment for the victims’ families. Ryan Bautista, the brother of missing sabungero Michael Bautista, expressed his joy, stating, “Of course we’re very happy because we waited for this for four years.”

DOJ to evaluate complaints

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla confirmed that the complaints against Ang would undergo a thorough evaluation process. He noted that Ang was the former boss of whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patidongan in the cockfighting industry. Remulla emphasized the importance of a trial, saying, “He is the main player there, he is the boss of Totoy, of Dondon. He paid for the work done by the police contractor. That’s why it is really important for this to be litigated.”

Prosecutor General Richard Anthony Fadullon explained that during the initial evaluation, the DOJ will only consider the evidence presented by the complainant to determine if it is sufficient to proceed. If it is, the case will be referred for a preliminary investigation, at which point the respondents will be asked for their side of the story.

Gretchen Barretto and other accusations

Remulla also mentioned that actress Gretchen Barretto could be one of the “Jane Does” in the complaint, calling her a “person of interest.” Barretto has previously denied accusations of being a mastermind in the disappearances, stating that she was only an investor in Ang’s Pitmaster Group.

The filing of these charges provides a sense of hope for the families who have been waiting for justice for years. Charlene Lasco, a sister of another missing sabungero, Ricardo Lasco, said, “Our request is for them (DOJ) to carefully study and investigate the case to find probable cause and have a basis to issue a warrant as soon as possible.”
