Batanes remains under signal no. 1 as Typhoon Gorio nears

MANILA – Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 is still raised over Batanes as Typhoon Gorio maintained its strength, the weather bureau said in its 5 p.m. bulletin on Tuesday. The typhoon was located 440 km east of Itbayat, Batanes as of 4 p.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 150 kph.
PAGASA reported that Gorio is enhancing the southwest monsoon, which is causing strong to gale-force gusts over the Babuyan Islands and the northern portion of mainland Cagayan. A gale warning is in effect over the seaboard of extreme Northern Luzon, with up to very rough seas prevailing over Batanes, making sea travel risky for all types of vessels. Mariners of small sea craft are advised not to venture out to sea over the northern and eastern seaboards of the Babuyan Islands.
The weather bureau also noted that while there is no storm surge warning, an increased potential for coastal flooding exists due to high waves near the coast.
Typhoon Gorio is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday afternoon or evening.
