President Marcos Jr. orders replacement of steep ‘Mt. Kamuning’ footbridge

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has instructed the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to remove the footbridge colloquially known as “Mt. Kamuning” in Quezon City and replace it with a new, improved, and accessible crossing. The directive comes in response to the overpass’s steep incline and lack of accessibility, particularly for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
“Ang tingin ko talaga sa saloobin ni Pangulo ay hindi naman talaga dapat ganito ang ginagawa natin para sa mga kababayan natin lalo na yung mga road users at komyuter,” (I really think the President’s sentiment is that this is not how we should treat our fellow citizens, especially road users and commuters) Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon stated.
Dizon further quoted the President’s direct instruction: “‘We have to tear it down and build a better one.’ And I think that is really the essence of what he wants to do.” Secretary Dizon assured that the government would act swiftly on this order.
“Malinaw naman ang utos ng Pangulo na gawing mas convenient ang facilities natin para sa pedestrians at commuters. At ‘yan ang gagawin natin, sisiguruhin natin na ‘yung ipapalit na overpass ay mas madali para sa mga kakabayan natin,” (The President gave clear orders to make our facilities more convenient for pedestrians and commuters. And that is what we will do. We will make sure that the overpass to replace it will be easier for our countrymen to use) Dizon added.
The DOTr plans to replace “Mt. Kamuning” with a lower footbridge that will include elevators and be directly connected to the GMA-Kamuning EDSA Busway Station for seamless access. Construction for the new structure is expected to begin this year.
