DOH notes ‘slight increase’ in mpox cases, still below last year’s figures

The Department of Health (DOH) reported on Saturday a “slight increase” in mpox cases across the Philippines, though the current figures remain lower than those recorded last year.

While the DOH did not provide specific current numbers, the agency had confirmed a total of 911 mpox cases in the Philippines since 2024 as of May 2025.

“There is a slight increase of cases in some LGUs (local government units) but it is not higher than last year,” Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa told reporters. “The number of cases we saw last year is still higher.”

Herbosa emphasized the DOH’s proactive measures. “We’re increasing our campaigns on education and treatment and isolation so it doesn’t spread and increase further,” he added.

The Health Secretary did not specify which areas registered the new mpox cases. He reiterated that the Philippines remains under “Clade 2,” which is considered less severe than “Clade 1” and is “self-limiting.”

“We are not part of the public health emergency of concern. That’s for Clade 1,” Herbosa clarified.
