Floods submerge Metro Manila streets following heavy rains

MANILA, Philippines – Heavy rains on Saturday evening led to significant flooding across several major thoroughfares in Metro Manila, with water levels ranging from gutter-deep to waist-deep in various areas, according to reports from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). The downpour caused considerable disruption to traffic and rendered some roads impassable, particularly to light vehicles.
As of the MMDA’s 6:47 p.m. update, affected areas included:
Quezon City:
- EDSA NB, after Quezon Ave. flyover: Half Gutter Deep – Passable to all types of vehicles.
- Quezon Ave. Biak na Bato EB and WB: Waist Deep – Not passable to light vehicles.
- EDSA NB, Balintawak: Gutter Deep – Passable to all types of vehicles.
- G. Araneta Ave. Karilaya SB/NB: Knee Deep – Not passable to light vehicles.
Caloocan City:

Later updates, including the MMDA’s 9:20 p.m. flood report, indicated some changes. While parts of Araneta Avenue in Quezon City remained gutter-deep and passable, floodwaters in Biak na Bato, Barangay Sto. Domingo, which had earlier reached chest level, subsided to gutter-deep. Traffic was reported as heavy from Quezon City to Manila and vice versa, particularly along sections of España Boulevard and Blumentritt. The 9:20 p.m. MMDA update for Manila City listed: España (Lacson to Vicente Cruz, EB/WB) as knee-deep and impassable to light vehicles, España Blvd corner Antipolo Street at 4 inches (half gutter-deep) but passable, and Jose Abad Santos-Tayuman Intersection as gutter-deep and passable.
The heavy rainfall was attributed to intense to torrential rain showers with lightning and strong winds, affecting not only Metro Manila areas like Quezon City, Manila, Caloocan, Valenzuela, Malabon, Navotas, Muntinlupa, Marikina, Mandaluyong, and San Juan, but also eight other Luzon areas, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa)’s 4:37 p.m. thunderstorm advisory.
