Grab Philippines, in collaboration with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and property developer Megaworld Corporation, has initiated a pilot study on drone-powered commercial delivery in the Philippines. The project aims to assess the feasibility of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to enhance urban logistics and potentially mitigate traffic congestion.

The initiative will explore a hybrid delivery model. Grab delivery partners will manage the pick-up and drop-off of packages from designated drone landing stations, while drones will handle the inter-station transit to facilitate faster deliveries.

Ronald Roda, Managing Director of Grab Philippines, stated that the pilot is an opportunity to understand how drone deliveries could function within the Philippine context, encompassing both urban and underserved areas. He expressed optimism about the insights the study is expected to yield regarding benefits for consumers, merchant-partners, and delivery partners.

The Philippines’ geography, characterized by its archipelagic nature and increasing reliance on e-commerce, is cited as a suitable environment for testing drone-based logistics. This pilot also aligns with broader efforts to modernize transport and delivery systems, with an emphasis on responsible and people-centered technology deployment.

Drone deliveries will initially be tested between two Megaworld properties in Metro Manila. This controlled environment will enable Grab and its partners to evaluate operational, technical, and regulatory considerations. Access to the pilot will be limited to selected consumers and merchant partners within these Megaworld townships.

The collaborative effort officially commenced with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between DICT, DOTr, Grab, and Megaworld. This MOU outlines future pilot activities, opportunities for jointly examining use cases, assessing learnings, and fostering public awareness of drone-enabled services.

Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative in addressing mobility challenges in a rapidly urbanizing nation. He noted that drone logistics could contribute to faster, smarter, and more sustainable movement, reflecting an encouragement of innovation within a modern transport ecosystem, while ensuring air transport safety and security through responsive regulatory frameworks.

DICT Undersecretary for Special Concerns Christina Faye Condez-de Sagon emphasized the government’s interest in guiding drone technology’s responsible use to address gaps in access and logistics, supporting the nation’s digital transformation. Tyrone Tan, Cluster General Manager of Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, added that the pilot supports Megaworld’s vision for developing smarter communities, offering more sustainable, efficient, and forward-thinking services to its occupants and partners.

If successful, this drone pilot could serve as a model for integrating aerial logistics into commerce nationwide, potentially expanding to additional locations and developing drone corridors to alleviate pressure on existing road networks.
