Taylor Swift announces release date, unveils album cover for ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ during podcast debut

In a surprise move, global superstar Taylor Swift has officially announced her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, with a release date of October 3. The announcement came during her debut appearance on the popular “New Heights” podcast, hosted by her boyfriend Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce.

Swift revealed the album’s title and cover art, which features a vibrant orange theme, on the podcast and simultaneously on her official website and Instagram. The album will follow her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, which was released in April 2024.

“I care more about this record more than I can even overstate,” Swift said during the podcast. “This is the record I’ve been wanting to make for a very long time.” She explained that the album’s sound is a “complete 180” from the darker tones of Tortured Poets, describing it as “a lot more upbeat, and it’s a lot more like fun pop, like excitement.”

The album’s title, The Life of a Showgirl, was inspired by Swift’s experience of creating the music while on the road for the Eras Tour. “I was physically exhausted… but I was so mentally stimulated and so excited to be creating,” she shared. “I was! Which is why I called it that. Nailed it.”

Fans who pre-order the album on Swift’s website have been able to view the tracklist, which includes 12 songs. A notable collaboration is a song called “The Life of a Showgirl (feat. Sabrina Carpenter).” The tracklist is as follows:

  • The Fate of Ophelia
  • Elizabeth Taylor
  • Opalite
  • Father Figure
  • Eldest Daughter
  • Ruin The Friendship
  • Actually Romantic
  • WihLit
  • Wood
  • CANCELLED!
  • Honey
  • The Life of a Showgirl (feat. Sabrina Carpenter)

Swift also delved into the significance of the color orange, which has been a recurring theme in the album’s rollout. She explained that the color represents the “exuberant and electric and vibrant” energy of her life behind the scenes during the Eras Tour. She confirmed that the orange door she exited through at the Eras Tour finale was a deliberate “Easter Egg” to signal a new era.

The new album sees Swift reuniting with collaborators Max Martin and Shellback, who she previously worked with on her albums Red, Reputation, and 1989. “It felt like catching lightning in a bottle,” she said of the reunion.

Beyond the new album, Swift became emotional while discussing the moment she learned she had acquired her masters. She revealed that her mother, Andrea Swift, and brother, Austin Swift, represented her in a meeting with the investment firm Shamrock Capital. She received the news in a call from her mother after the Super Bowl, and described the moment as life-changing. “I just very dramatically hit the floor for real, honestly just started bawling my eyes out,” she recalled, adding that Travis Kelce was by her side at the time.
