COMELEC debunks ‘no National ID, no vote’ claim as fake news

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has issued a public warning against false information circulating online, denying claims that voters without a National ID will be barred from casting their ballots in the upcoming May 12 midterm elections.

In a strongly worded post on its official Facebook page, the poll body labeled the viral advisory as “false” and emphasized that it did not originate from COMELEC.

“The supposed ‘No National ID, No Vote’ public advisory is false and did not originate from the Commission on Elections,” the agency clarified. “It was not posted on the official and verified social media channels of the COMELEC on any social media platform.”

COMELEC explained that voters will only be asked to present any valid government-issued ID if their identity cannot be verified through the Election Day Computerized Voters’ List (EDCVL).

The commission also called on the public to help curb the spread of election-related disinformation. “Always verify through official COMELEC sources,” it added. — ABN
