PAGASA declares start of ‘habagat’ season

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially declared the beginning of the Southwest Monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” season on Friday, May 30, 2025. This development signals a shift in the country’s weather patterns and is considered a precursor to the onset of the full rainy season.
According to PAGASA, recent weather analysis revealed the consistent presence of low-level southwesterly winds over the western section of Luzon and a frontal system over Extreme Northern Luzon. Coupled with the weakening of the Easterlies, these conditions indicate the establishment of the Habagat.
While the Habagat season has begun, PAGASA clarified that the official onset of the rainy season itself is expected within the next two weeks. As the Southwest Monsoon becomes more dominant, occasional to frequent rains and thunderstorms are anticipated, particularly over the western parts of the country. However, periods of “monsoon breaks,” or temporary lulls in rainfall, are also possible.
PAGASA’s DOST S&T Media Service stated that the agency will continue to closely monitor the weather situation. The public and all concerned agencies are advised to take precautionary measures against the potential impacts of the Habagat, such as floods and rain-induced landslides.
