Senior government officials and top business leaders gathered at the Singapore-Hong Kong Business Roundtable today (14 January), an event co-organized by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) and the Singapore Business Federation (SBF). The roundtable highlighted the vast potential for further collaboration between two of Asia’s leading economic hubs.
Key attendees included Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau, HKGCC Chairman Agnes Chan, SBF Chairman Lim Ming Yan, and Singapore Consul General to Hong Kong Ong Siew Gay.
Over the years, both cities have forged various bilateral agreements aimed at strengthening economic ties, particularly in areas like trade facilitation, investment, and technological partnerships. HKGCC Chairman Agnes Chan emphasized the importance of the strong relationship between Hong Kong and Singapore.
As the second successful collaboration between HKGCC and SBF, the event saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organizations.
“The two economies share a robust and constructive partnership as global leaders in several key sectors and as gateways to wider markets in our respective regions. We will continue to support Hong Kong businesses in expanding their presence in international markets, with ASEAN being a key focus going forward,” said Chan.
SBF Chairman Lim Ming Yan remarked, “The Singapore-Hong Kong relationship remains a cornerstone for trade and investment in Asia. Through platforms such as the business roundtable and initiatives such as our partnership with HKGCC, we are building a foundation that empowers businesses to adapt, grow and thrive in an interconnected global economy.”
After the MoU signing, participants took part in two panel discussions. The first panel, titled “Digital Finance, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship,” examined cross-border transaction systems, regulatory innovation, cryptocurrency, and enhanced financial integration and data-sharing to benefit both decision-makers and consumers.
Experts also discussed government policies that promote innovation and foster vibrant start-up ecosystems. Given the high global competitiveness of both economies, the panelists stressed that market collaboration, as well as knowledge and talent exchange, are essential for expanding into Greater China and Southeast Asia.
The second panel, “Supply Chains and Climate Change,” saw industry leaders agree that collaboration, rather than competition, is key to addressing the challenges posed by post-pandemic supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions. They also explored the demand for green fuels, China’s emerging role as a leading supplier, and the potential for expanding Asia’s green corridors to enhance energy connectivity. Additionally, the need for sustainable green building practices and a unified approach among stakeholders to drive meaningful change was discussed.
The roundtable provided a valuable platform for dialogue on crucial issues and opportunities, reaffirming both Hong Kong and Singapore’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and fostering regional growth.
